Daily Science Report: Saturday January 21

Rocks on deck!! In the late morning we recovered our first rocks using the Jason elevator. Approximately 150 lbs (24 samples)of beautiful, & relatively fresh gabbro plus a possible fault rock. The olivine gabbros show occasional igneous layering and a week foliation. The outcrop really is stunning. Essentially continuous outcrop for nearly 1 vertical kilometer. We’re hoping for 80+ samples by the time the dive ends tomorrow (~ 1 sample every 12m of vertical height). We also did our first rock orientation using Jeff Gee’s new orientation device-& it worked very well. Plus we saw some new animals: a beautiful anemone, a fish, and a chiroteuthis octopus.
