In January and February 2017 an international team of scientists boarded the R/V Atlantis, to explore the Pito Deep. This is a point at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean where tectonic plates have exposed a cross section of lower ocean crust. Using remotely operated and autonomous underwater vehicles they collected an unprecedented collection of lower crustal rock samples, created an incredibly high resolution map of the area, and discovered at least 4 new hydrothermal vents. You can find a record of the journey here including our blog posts, photos and videos.
